406 ELT's Mandated In Canada?
The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) is warning pilots they should be concerned that revisions to a regulation's wording could mean mandatory installation of 406 ELTs in all Canadian aircraft -- and transient aircraft, too. In a letter from Kevin Psutka, president and CEO, Canadian Owners and Pilots Association, Psutka states that "low-cost alternatives to ELTs have all but been ruled out for our sector of aviation." Because the U.S. does not mandate 406 ELTs, "thousands of U.S. aircraft will be banned from Canada," posing a particular problem for aircraft transiting to and from Alaska. COPA is advising its members that the next opportunity for comment will be when the draft regulation is publicly announced.
EPA Cleans Up Radium Instruments For Strube
The Department of Environmental Protection December 25 formally requested that the EPA take action including "removal and remediation duties" at seven facilities that house radium dial instruments. The facilities, owned by Strube Inc., and located in Lancaster Country, Pa., had been the subject of visits and inspections by DEP, which found Strube uncommitted to meet previously outlined cleanup deadlines. Deemed "hazardous materials" the aged instruments that may no longer be used in aircraft must be "identified and properly disposed of" because Strube had "improperly stored" them, according to the EPA. Strube officials claim there is no public health threat. Strube's warehouses may contain an estimated 20,000 of the instruments hidden among some 58 million aircraft components, according to Strube. The instruments may have been there since the 1950s.
Picture of the Week: AVweb's Flying Photography Showcase
A slight dip in the number submissions this week has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. For one thing, we can run a few more of last week's incredible photos in our home page slideshow. (Seriously, we almost had enough from last week to have run a second "POTW" column!) While the quantity may be lower this week, the quality certainly isn't! We can't recall when we've had a tougher time deciding which of our finalists should receive heaping accolades (and a free AVweb baseball cap) but somehow we managed to agree on this incredible shot from J.T. Vink of Terre Haute, Indiana.

Time Is Up For E-LSA Registration
The day that's been looming for more than three years - January 31, 2008 - arrives Thursday, and with it the hard deadline for owners of two-place or "fat" ultralights to submit their aircraft registration (n-number) application for converting their aircraft to an experimental light-sport aircraft (E-LSA).
2008 EAA Skiplane Fly-In
As EAA Founder Paul Poberezny has said many times, while it was airplanes and the love of aviation that brought people together to form the EAA, the organization is really all about people. At no time was that more evident than on the organization's 55th anniversary, Saturday, January 26, as a large group of aviation enthusiasts turned out on an overcast, flurry-filled day for the annual EAA Skiplane Fly-In at Pioneer Airport.
